Attention Students

As you plan your upcoming year, be sure to take note of the following events:

The 2007 Careers in Mathematics Conference

West Chester University is hosting our biennial Careers in Mathematics Conference. Representatives from a wide range of fields — graduate studies, pharmaceuticals, mathematical finance, education, and more — will help give insight on the wide range of options open to students pursuing a mathematics major.

Information will be arriving in your mailbox for registration and more detailed information. The day will start with a panel discussion before giving you an opportunity to speak with individual representatives more extensively. The Conference is Saturday, October 20 from 9:00am to 4:00pm. There is a $10 registration fee for the Conference. Please contact Kevin Hartshorn (hartshorn@moravian.edu) or Peter Zimmer (PZimmer@wcupa.edu) for more information.

The 2007 EPaDel Fall Section Meeting

Drexel University is hosting the fall meeting on November 10. Students are encouraged to hear the invited address, to listen to fellow undergraduates present short talks, or to present short talks themselves. Registration for students is $12, which includes continental breakfast and snacks. Lunch is $8. A detailed program will be posted at http://www.maa.org/epadel.

Students are invited to present 10 minute talks on a mathematics-related topic. Talks may be expository, based on research, or descriptive of a mathematical activity. Students interested in speaking at the fall meeting can register online through the EPaDel website (http://www.maa.org/epadel). Those wishing to submit an application for a student talk must do so by October 22.

The Joint AMS/MAA Meeting

The joint meeting this year will be in San Diego, California, January 6—9, 2008. As always, there will be a host of activities for students, both graduate and undergraduate, including the Undergraduate Student Poster Session, a session on “Undergraduate Career Paths for Mathematicians”, and the Who Wants to be a Mathematician? game show. For more information, be sure to visit http://www.ams.org/amsmtgs/2109_intro.html.

The Moravian College Student Mathematics Conference

Encourage your undergraduates to present a short talk at this annual event. The conference is scheduled for February 16, 2008.

This year, students are invited to submit presentations connecting art and mathematics. Please have any students who have combined an aesthetic sense with a love for mathematics send their work to share at the conference. More information can be found at http://math.moravian.edu/conference/.

The EPaDel Section’s Spring Meeting

Cedar Crest College will host the spring meeting on April 5, 2008. Save the date and watch the section web page for more information.

The EPaDel Section Student Mathematical Papers Prize Competition

If you know any undergraduates writing a mathematical paper this year, encourage them to enter the Papers Prize Competition. Deadline for submission will be May 30, 2008. Winners of the 2007 competition will be announced at the EPaDel Fall Section Meeting. For more information, please visit http://www.maa.org/epadel.

Student Chapter Activities

If your Student Chapter has a website, please consider adding it to the national list of Student Chapter Websites, available at http://www.maa.org/students/SCwebsites.html. To add your Student Chapter’s site, contact hnesbitt@maa.org (note that although Hal Nesbitt has stepped down from his work at the MAA, e-mail should still be sent to this address).

Remind your Student Chapter members that in order to take advantage of the reduced membership fee, they must renew their membership through their advisor. Student membership is $30 per year and includes a copy of Math Horizons and the MAA’s newsletter Focus. For an additional fee, students may also receive The College Mathematics Journal or The American Mathematical Monthly. Please visit http://www.maa.org/students/chapter_index.html for more information.

Math Horizons

If your department has not done so already, remember to order Math Horizons for your students. A bulk subscription of 20 copies costs just $200 for the year. For more information, visit the Math Horizons page at http://www.maa.org/mathhorizons. Also note that students who join an MAA Student Chapter also receives Math Horizons as part of their membership.

I look forward to seeing or hearing from you over the next year. If your Student Chapter is hosting an event you wish to share with the EPaDel Section, please feel free to contact me at hartshorn@moravian.edu or our section’s webmaster Michael Fraboni at epadel@cs.moravian.edu.

For more information, be sure to visit both the national website http://www.maa.org and the regional site http://www.maa.org/epadel. Please feel free to contact me about any questions that you our your students might have.

Looking forward to seeing you,
